PART 3: LOVE DOES NOT ENVY
“Love does not envy” ~ 1 Corinthians 13:4b
ENVY: Resenting God's goodness to others &
Ignoring God's goodness to me
Envy is the fever ~ Doubting God is the infection
GOD’S PROTECTION FROM ENVY
Matthew 20:9-10 ~ Luke 3:14 ~ 2 Corinthians 10:12
· Comparing leads to 1 of 2 sins: pride or envy
· What matters in life, is not your hard earned accomplishments
but is your relationships
· Envy occurs when you don’t know people intimately ~
You see success from a distance
Matthew 20:10-11, 15b
Rejoice with those who rejoice Romans 12:15
· You Choose: Be Thankful or Be Resentful
· Start enjoying God’s grace to other people ~
When you see God being kind and good to others ~
learn to enjoy it rather than resent it
· Criticism is almost always based in envy
#3. Be Grateful For What You Have
Matthew 20:10-11
“Isn't everything you have and everything you are sheer gifts from God?
So what's the point of all this comparing and competing?
You already have all you need!” 1 Corinthians 4:7b-8a
“Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned
how to be content with whatever I have” Philippians 4:11
· The MYTH of ENVY: I MUST have MORE to be HAPPY
· Instead of focusing on what you don’t have and what didn’t happen, be grateful for what you do have and what God did choose to do in your life
· Satan’s trap is exposed when someone says,
“It’s not fair!” ~ “Why them and not me?”
· When you ENVY ~ you are in a battle with God ~
you are doubting His goodness ~
you resent God’s decision to bless someone else
· God has a good reason why I don’t have
the things that I WANT ~ It is Because
He knows me better than I know myself ~ TRUST GOD
“Take your money now and go” Matthew 20:14
· He’s saying to those who are complaining ~
GET OVER IT ~ don’t be stuck in the past
“Let us run with patience the particular race
that God has set before us.” Hebrews 12:1-2
